FROM THE DESK OF PRESIDENT FORD

Writer's picture: Local 685 Executive BoardLocal 685 Executive Board

Sisters and Brothers,

From the phone calls I received last night and throughout the morning (and will receive throughout the day), there is a matter of concern about the California Board of State and Community Corrections declaring two of our facilities unsuitable for housing justice involved youth. Those facilities include Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall and BJNJ- SYTF locations. Sisters and Brothers, we’ve been down this road before, and we are running out of options. Local 685 executive board is deeply concerned about this ruling by the BSCC yesterday, February 15, 2024. We acknowledge the gravity of this situation and emphasize the need for immediate action to rectify the conditions within the specified 60-day time frame.

This development underscores the importance of maintaining safe and appropriate environments for justice-involved youth and the officers that are committed and dedicated to rehabilitating them in a safe and secure environment. The well-being of these young individuals is paramount, and we, as the dedicated OFFICERS of Local 685, recognize the urgency in addressing this matter.

We urge The Los Angeles County Probation management team to work diligently and collaboratively to remedy the deficiencies identified in the facilities. It is imperative that swift measures are taken to ensure the proper care, rehabilitation, and security of the juveniles under our supervision.

Sisters and Brothers, we are a family, this is an “ALL HANDS-ON DECK” moment for all Local 685 members. We have to be united and come together on this one. As your president, I am speaking on behalf of the Executive Board. As your leader, PLEASE, work with the department on this matter. Please work with the Union as we work through this situation.

It is up to us to help SAVE OUR JOBS by working collectively with the Action Plan (CAP) presented by the department to the BSCC. It is up to all of us to stand together united in our commitment to the welfare of the youth in our care, and we are ready to collaborate with the County to implement necessary improvements. Our collective dedication to justice and rehabilitation is unwavering, and we call on ALL stakeholders to prioritize the well being of these young individuals.

Local 685, this is a fight we must win. We can do this if we stand together. Now is not the time to be divided; we must be united. An injury to one is an injury to all. As your leader, the Executive Board and I will lead the way. We will be on the front line and also behind the scenes making this happen. I love you and this department.

Thought for the day:

Without you I’m nothing. With you, I’m everything.
